This is Where the Life is

We often think of meaningful, memorable or “real life” moments when they happen on a grand scale. They would appear less frequent. What we could call “mountaintop moments.” Like literally standing on top of a mountain and soaking in the panoramic view that lies before you, the sun cresting over another distant peak. The scenery, the beauty, the clarity it affords. And it would be true. These are one-of-a-kind amazing moments. We crave these, and would invite more of them into our lives.

But those are uncommon, and they don’t happen all the time, making them certainly special.

But what about holding your spouse’s hand as you are walking through your town’s holiday event?

When you watch your daughter blow out the candles on her birthday cake?

When a friend gets a new job promotion.

When you a get random, encouraging text from someone you haven’t heard from in a while.

When someone surprises you with a gift, like tickets to a game or concert.

When you bless someone in line at checkout.

Last fall, I was watching my son’s football game in the stands on a perfect autumn evening. The sky was ablaze with the seasons signature colors, a crisp feeling was in the air. (That cool September air alone makes you feel alive, BTW) The scent of cider and donuts wafting nearby. Everything felt perfect. Time stood still. There was no where else I wanted to be. In other words, I could stay here, in this environment forever. I was alive, and enjoying the simple moment I was given.

I heard a whisper inside of me, very clearly saying, “This is where the life is.”

I paused to take it.

Yep, it was true.

This is where the life is.

Right here. Right now.

Ever since that, I’ve begun to train myself to be aware of these moments. And guess what? They aren’t as rare as you would think. In fact, they are happening all the time around us. You just need to be able to recognize them for what they are. Be ready and aware, expecting even. And then savor them.

When was the last time you had a moment filled with joy? A simple joy, I might add. Was it at a coffee shop catching up with a friend? When was the last time you were overcome or overwhelmed by a presentation of beauty? Was it at church?

It creeps up suddenly, almost surprises you.
Often times these are simple, ordinary moments. Because…that’s life.
When your find yourself wrapped in one, I encourage you to learn the art of savoring these moments.

Have you ever observed a West Michigan sunset and felt a peace and calm sweep over your soul? I have.
Your senses let you know you’re alive.

Smell warm, fresh baked bread.
Taste a strawberry in peak season.
Touch the grass with bare feet.
Hear the symphony, with eighty different layers and sounds intricately weaving together.
See the fiery colors changing during October.

May your senses be heightened.

Some people might be wondering what it looks like to live an inspired life. Find the people, places, things, and events in life that inspire you. And schedule them in your calendar. Make time for them. I know it sounds ridiculously simple, but often times we don’t do this on purpose. If someone gives you life just be being in their company, spend more time with them. If you discover or know of one particular thing that brings you joy, why wouldn’t you make it a regular occurrence?

It could be a simple as inviting friends over for a meal, or a vinyl listening party.
Or taking a road trip for a weekend.
Or as big as going to Europe to hunt down and explore old castles.
Taking a Lighthouse Tour around the state of Michigan.
Going to your local park.

For me, it’s usually at a meal. Food and friends seem to pair very well together. Add to that music and good conversation? Well, that just might be a perfect night.

Wait for the whisper. This is where the life is.
